Do we need to set up a PayPal business account (no website yet) or do we just link our account to a bank account so the sales can be deposited? I also have a Square account and have taken people’s cc numbers over the phone (is there a safe online way to to take this information?).

Yes, you can create an Online Store with Squareup. Once you create the store you can then embed the URL into a button, picture or word on your website. Your customers fill in their information, when a purchase is made you are informed.

I have actually been experimenting with hashtags on my @spongestudio Instagram account, mostly art-related ones. I’ll try some of those listed at Postplanner, although my integrity will only allow me to use them if they actually apply to the photo in question. I doubt I’ll use #food very much, heh.

I have been using hashtags quite a lot for a while now. I read somewhere that it is good to use 8-11 on Instagram but only 2-3 on Facebook. I posted on the FB page my unusual showcasing of my art today, as well as on my social media. I have also shared an other artist’s work for the last 2 days. –

I’m really glad I signed up for the challenge as I’m getting a lot out of it – thanks Cory.

I am new to this Hashtag thing. I don’t know anything about it really, except for what I’ve learned through this challenge. Where can I go to find out more about how to use hashtags?

I am using hashtags all the time as must )) Twiitter/ Google +/ Facebook, but for now much less on Pinterest as they are ranking lower for now with their new policies.
Done sharing of some artists on my artistic page and showed my photography in situ (in interior) – love it!

And guess what??! This morning I have got a sale! Small print on FineArtAmerica, but still its a sale!
    Thanks again Cory!

I don’t see any video for this challenge (Day 4). I’ll check later. I’ve already been doing this challenge–I wrote some stories and illustrated them, I did a series of humorous art with funny captions. That has been popular with people so far. I even wrote and illustrated a comic book. Right now I can’t think of any other ways of showing my work that would be new and different, but I’ll keep thinking about it. Someone is going to help me show my work on Instagram because I don’t know how to use it. That will fit this challenge. I wish I would get a sale from this challenge. It’s very frustrating. I’ll list my website. Maybe that will help. http://www.bevchickart.com

omg can I just tell you how hard it is to do many hashtags. I feel like they are being manipulative! Or too cutesie or something. Is anyone else having that problem?

GeorgeAnne, Have you googled your question???? All you have to do is type in “how to use hashtasgs” (no quotes) and you will be blessed with endless articles on how to use them and where.

I was super confused too until I started experimenting about a month ago. Here’s what I learned, by no means definitive so if others have better advice I won’t be offended! This is focused on Instragram:
        1. Hashtags aren’t manipulative or “cutsie” or fake – things of them like the old library stacks. If you use *appropriate and applicable* categories or hashtags, then it’s on point. It’s how people navigate millions of posts, by searching, browsing or subscribing to topics or categories they find interesting and the code word for those is “hashtags”.

2.Applying it to art. So, how does somebody in Maine find my art on Instragram? They search for that category, or “hashtag” on Instagram (& other media). So if my painting is of some flowers in my garden, I might add the following hashtags/categories: #oilpaintings #urbangardens #seattleartists. Anyone who subscribes to those hashtags or browses them might see my work., like the post, follow me, or buy art at some point…

        3. Where to find hashtags? In your post, if you start typing # + a word, a hashtag list will appear, but you have to know what to start with. Too hard. You can browse on Instragram search. Maybe another way there? But I found this: https://top-hashtags.com/instagram/ Don’t just pick the top most popular hashtag. I like to mix things up, pick a large one that applies, pick a local one or two that apply, a hyper local/neighborhood one, etc. Depends on your goal; mine is to build a NW following first right now. So I use #seattleartist #ballardseattle #buildingc alot, among others, to reach out to my city, neighborhood and promote the studio building I’m in. I use some general ones too, like #oilpainting for example, which is non-geographic.

An IG marketing analyst will probably have more/better tips so do your research! But this is as far as I’ve gotten so far…

You can Google how to use hashtags and will get tons of great ideas, also, there are lists of powerful words to hashtag.
Also, (if you use and Apple product) watch for them to show up as you type them for their weight. Its how I learned to use them and its lots of fun.
You will definitely get followers because of it. 🙂
    Great suggestion, Cory…:) Laura

I never got step 1 but got step 2,3, and 4. Step 3 was to set up a PayPal account or another way to collect income as well as working on a web page (site) if you didn’t have one yet.

    Hello Cory,

Thanks for this information but it doesn’t really help me.
The art you use as examples is conventional and saleable.
HERE’S A CHALLENGE FOR YOU – How do I reach an audience with art that criticises commercialization and comforting aesthetics – in fact is damning of the system that allows people to amass the money necessary to collect art while others live from food banks? I need to get my message across and I need to eat – I’m not going to do it by being friendly on social media!

Garry – just an fyi, all-caps on the Internet is seen as shouting. That may not be what you meant, so I wanted to inform you.

You can engage on social media and talk about important subjects too. It doesn’t have to be all about friendliness and sunshine. You can address the issues that underly your art as well – as long as you do it articulately and respectfully.

My response to you would be: who do you see as the possible collectors of your art?

        Cory.

Don’t patronize me – I’m aware of internet protocol. Yes, I was shouting to get your attention – I’ve tried in the past and had no response.
I’m 60 years old, I’ve been painting for 40 years and at odds with the direction of western culture all my life. My challenge to you is – who do YOU see as the audience of my art?

          Garry,

HEY! Yes, that’s a shout, because you’re not being very polite to Cory, when he tried to help you! Lighten up dude! He gave you some good advice, now why don’t YOU follow it? You are the best one to figure out who, if anyone, is the best audience to your art.

Maybe you could do the anti-marketing thing, such as the restaurant which specialises in rudeness and abuses their customers on purpose–they have become very popular, people are entertained by it–so it’s a huge success, with people lined up to get in. “Worst service in town” kind of thing.

Maybe you could be “rudest artist trying desperately to get his precious message across” kind of thing.

I’m not mocking you, I am actually making a suggestion that could help you in your marketing. I think you have what it takes to do this!

See, there’s more free advice for you. Stop wingeing and start being thankful to some of those who offer help! 🙂

You can use your grumpiness to be so ornery and abusive it might get some attention to your art–but there’s a way to do it, obviously.

All the best, I’m sure there’s a way for everyone to succeed. Keep following Cory’s advice in general, and I know you will get there. Even just keep posting work on Instagram will get you some attention. And if you really can work it, you could create this unique persona which would get your art on the map in an original way.

            Hello Carmel,
Thankyou for your contribution but there’s no need to be concerned. I’m not being rude – Cory Huff knows that I’m just being straight with him.
Remember that you don’t know my background, history or circumstances and you don’t know Cory Huff’s motives either. I suppose you mean well but you need to know a lot more about someone before you ‘re able to make judgements about them or give them advice. I’m afraid your wisdom is wasted in this case.

            Besr wishes
            Garry

Thanks a ton for creating this challenge.

Well, I’ve been away for awhile. Been busy trying to upgrade my technology. Get some online banking in order. Upgrade my camera, think I may have gone with the wrong brand, wrong type of camera basically. Anyway to get to the point. Got my website with pay pal set up. Took some time, as I am computer illiterate. Had to learn the basics, but got my website up and running. Thanks to FASO.com.. Which is a website I came across doing some research. It’s a website that helps artists build their website using simple to build templates, buttons etc.. Just a simple click here and there and voila, your all done. http://fsutherland.fineartstudioonline.com/
Here’s a link to my website with FASO. Check it out, have a look. I recommend for any artist who is also computer illiterate or computer genius, that is trying to set up a website with pay pal. You can also set up pay pal with a second party if you don’t want the hassle of having to deal with your own. I went with my own. And its free. Also set up with https://www.saatchiart.com/fredericksutherland71
But if you want your own website. I recommend FASO.com
As for the humor and context being hashtag. I shared my own page that has to do with my art only. It’s a facebook page that has to do with boosting and reaching out to other people. My humor was in the text. All in all, everything is working out great. I’d like to thank Cory Huff and his faculty team, artists and everyone else for making this stepping stone a possibility to reach forward into the unknown without fear. Thank Yous All. Peace and Love. Meegwetch.

I must be missing something. The instructions of today’s challenge say nothing about “context, humor, hashtags”. Rather it says to “to share you work and your friends’ work in new, interesting ways”. What am I missing?

I totally agree – if you want your art to be remarkable you need to do something that makes people remark on it or how it was created. I paint horses so I decided to sit on a horse while creating a painting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SmB8cMxMIo&t=13s genius or just and eccentric old batt you decide
