Michelle Ward Answers Your Questions About What to Do When You Grow Up

A couple of weeks ago I asked readers to submit their questions to Michelle Ward, the When I Grow Up Coach. Michelle and I sat down and talked about your questions and riffed on the challenges that creative people face in their careers.

Some great questions:

[3:00] Vidya asks – When do I make the move to being a full time artist? How do I know it’s the right move?

[6:34] How do you figure out what your comfort zone is for risk?

[8:30] Karen asks how we can come to terms with enormous amounts of rejection?

(oh my gosh, Michelle and I went OFF on rejection. It’s the boogle-dee-boo of creatives and one of the hardest things to deal with.)

[12:40] Christine asks How do I make my web presence more personalized? How do I make people feel like they are meeting the real me online?

[19:40] kmheuser asks: Should I be waiting until my site is totally ready before I put it on the website?

[24:50] Carol Ann McFarland asks How do I identify my target market and start making sales?

[29:10] Sharon Williams asks How does an established artist slow down and not lose momentum totally?

[36:50] Boxomail how does an artist make an impression that leads to sales?

[44:20] Michelle talks about her rhyming workbook, Operation: Creative Career Cheer! The Illustrated Workbook. As I mentioned at the top of the video, Michelle is totally amazeballs, and her work inspires me every time I talk to her. Click here to view more details

*the law requires that I tell you that if you buy Michelle’s totally amazeballs book, I get a small commission. Nobody’s getting rich here – think of it like milk money. 🙂 Now seriously, go check out Michelle’s book – it’ll leave you in stitches.

    Magnificently Marvelous Michelle

and Keen King of Wealthy Artist Land Cory,

What a FANTASTIC way to start the day!

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!

I love the split frame format

that you used for the interview!

Michelle, the moment I read the word

‘Amazeballs’ I knew we must be

    soul sisters!

Vivacious Vidya – Your soul will tell you.

Create some time as often as possible and listen.

This ‘time’ when you hear what your soul is saying,

involves you doing whatever it is that most nourishes you.

Keen Karen – Change it into a reward for yourself, a celebration…

    because…

The more rejections you receive, the closer you are to the acceptances!

I like to use Michael Jordan. He missed a half million shots (rejections),

but he made a billion shots, and is the best basketball player ever.

    I simply say ‘Thank You! …next!’. 😀

Thank You for your kind words Cory!

Yes, it is really fun to share this with people!

“What do we love about each other?”

Hahahaha! My site was pretty cheesy

when it went up over 3 years ago.

I am a mostly recovered perfectionist.

I think it is good to take the steps that you feel are

right even if the thing/event/site is not perfect.

It is totally true – ‘if you wait until it is perfect…’

because it isn’t possible that it will ever be perfect

because of the changing nature of the web.

Colorful Carol – Fly over any shyness obstacles, go to places

you love and find a unique way to break the ice with people,

and start a conversation. How do you nourish people?

Create a cool, fun business card that people will love to receive.

and always give everyone your business card.

Perhaps put a sentence on it relating to them.

There are buyers for all art. I am positive

there are people out there praying to see and purchase yours.

    😀

Art by Delila – Garbage in garbage out.

Be around vivacious, positive, nourishing people, places, information, and things.

Change how you see everything and all people.

If you see EVERYONE as magnificent, they will show up for you in such ways

    in MOST cases. 😉

Search for motivation and inspiration and you will find it.

I recommend minimizing the news watching.

You will hear the news you need.

This is all super fantastic information

    and a great interview!

    Thank You!

    Sending you large sized wheelbarrows

overflowing with all your favorite things…

Crazy helpful interview! I love her idea of a “win” book… I go through the manic-depressive cycle way too frequently 😛 Thanks!

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

What a charge this woman is! Such a bundle of great energy and really great insight. The best thing about this is that she confirmed what I’ve been feeling for years, particularly about how you get started, your comfort zone, your uniqueness or, as she puts it, your “uniquity” being the key to the whole marketing and sales effort. What a treat! Great way to spend an hour during the break from my other job.

    Thanks again
